I work with the worst programmers I’ve ever met — Part-1 .

Makers gonna Make

Hello, my name is Rafi. Now I work in an international company engaged in event and mice management. In this opportunity, I would like to express a little bit of my complaint in working with the team for about 4 years.

Let’s say his name is Arga, is a programmer who graduated from one of the well-known informatics campuses in Yogyakarta who is currently working with me.

I got to know Arga at the end of 2015 along with a project from a lecturer at that time which required programmers to participate in the project. In that year I had no idea what code was and how it could change the business game at the time.

In short, at that time I really admired him because he knew a lot of understanding about code. At that time, we not only involved Arga in working on the project, but there was another side of the coin who was very competent in terms of code compared to Arga, let’s call it Rizmawan.

Similar to Arga, Rizmawan also comes from the same university but Rizmawan has a curiosity beyond just code. He had participated in his research related to code at a national seminar held by his university.

Time passed, we were no longer in touch with each other except for Rizmawan where with this project until now we often share various things about code and often I ask him for advice because his knowledge is more than what I currently have

In 2019 I was at a time where I had to choose between college and a career, I understood that I had to finish my studies considering I was a 2014 student at which time I was in semester 10.

I really understand what I want with myself, at that time I started applying for work and long story short I was offered by a friend to work in a foreign company in Singapore and in the end I was accepted at the company.

A few months passed, it turned out that the company I worked for still needed one programmer. That’s where I took the initiative to find friends or relatives who have competent skills in programming.

In short, I recommended Arga, who at that time was still working in an Indonesian company. Without thinking I gave his direct contact to HRD and said that he is a great programmer and this is where I made a mistake. A little flashback, I’ve seen the code that Arga made and there Rizmawan also complained in understanding the flow and logic he made.

Basically all the code will be easy to understand but everything changes when the code made does not have the appropriate rules and indents with the function or variable declaration made. The following is an image of the code that Arga has created.

Can you see the alignment ?

During the 4 years I worked with Arga, my complaints became more and more intense regarding his normalization in doing code activities that’s where I started to tell him firmly that I couldn’t read or understand what he had made and I only received a reply “Yes, later I will I’ll fix it” from that I assumed that he understood that something needed to be changed from the way he had applied at this time.

A few months passed, at that time I did not hold the project that he currently holds until one day I was told to take over the project that Arga had made. I accepted the project and I have confidence that Arga has made everything easy to understand and read however, everything changed when I opened the project.

Mama….

Feelings of anger and irritation have peaked. Sorry in advance, we have the same position but here I am more senior and arguably more competent than Arga based on the efforts and results we have received during our work. Long story short, I immediately contacted Arga to explain how this could happen and the answer I received was simply “I can’t implement it due to short time and an annoyed client”.

It didn’t stop there, I confirmed to the Project manager about this project and when this project should be completed and the result is that this project still has 3–4 months to complete. There I went back to Arga to tell him about it, but I only got the answer “Yes, it’s still a long time, but the client keeps asking that’s why I hurry up”

Pemanis untuk kamu yang manis.

This is too long to tell briefly, but I will continue this story when I have the intention hahaha. Well, let’s continue with the second story. Sorry if this storyline isn’t very clear, I also like being unclear at times in the face of the fact that I’m still working with Arga.

Last but not Least
